✈️ PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Christine Kaufman's Guide to Punta Cana's Best Beach

I've visited plenty of Caribbean beaches in my time as a travel advisor, but I needed to see Punta Cana for myself. When you recommend destinations to clients, there's no substitute for standing on the sand, tasting the food, and experiencing the service firsthand. So I organized a group trip with 19 fellow travelers, booked through Transat, and set off for a week at the Palladium Bavaro Select. What I discovered exceeded every expectation I had.

The moment I stepped onto Bavaro Beach, I understood why this destination earns so much praise. Crystal clear water. Smooth sand with no rocks, no sharp edges, nothing to worry about underfoot. Every single day of our trip, we found ourselves in that ocean for hours at a time. I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the only Caribbean beach where I've stayed in the water that long, every day, without wanting to leave. The waves were perfect for riding, the temperature was ideal, and the cleanliness was remarkable.

A stunning Caribbean sunrise ignites the horizon beneath dramatic clouds and swaying palm silhouettes.

Surprises That Made the Trip

What truly caught me off guard was an excursion I hadn't even known existed. We were able to book a boat trip directly through the resort that took our entire group snorkeling and to a separate beach area. Having the flexibility to do this together as a group of 19, without complicated outside bookings, made the experience seamless. It's exactly the kind of insider knowledge I can now share with clients planning their own Dominican adventures.

Here's something most travelers wouldn't know: we took a calculated risk with our timing. The resort had just completed renovations about six weeks before our arrival. Because we were willing to book during that window of uncertainty, we secured much more affordable rates and ended up with upgraded rooms and suites. Some renovation was still happening in other areas, but it didn't affect our stay at all. The staff was fully trained and absolutely phenomenal. That risk paid off beautifully.

Comparing Coasts

A stunning tropical beach sunset with crashing waves, palm silhouettes, and a glowing golden horizon.

Having now experienced both Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, I can speak with confidence about the differences. Punta Cana offers calmer water and that smooth white sand you see in all the photos. The resorts are relatively close to the airport, which makes arrival and departure much easier. Puerto Plata is beautiful in its own right, but the beaches can be rockier with rougher water, and everything is more spread out. For clients seeking that classic Caribbean beach experience with minimal hassle, Punta Cana wins.

During my stay, I toured the entire Palladium property, including the TRS section and the Family Select area. Now I know exactly how to match clients with the right experience. For adults seeking tranquility, TRS offers beautiful swim-up rooms in an adult-only setting. For families, the Family Select area is worth every penny of the upgrade. Children get their own check-in area with video games, TVs, and snacks waiting in a dedicated lobby. Those details matter when you're traveling with kids.

Who Should Book This Trip

Two people stroll along a pristine Caribbean beach beneath a dramatically leaning palm tree.

This destination works beautifully for couples and families alike. Our group included paired couples, single adults, and everyone found something to love. The Bavaro Select property strikes that balance between romantic getaway and family-friendly resort, depending on which section you choose. If you're seeking a Caribbean escape with exceptional service, gorgeous beaches, and the convenience of easy airport access, I would recommend this without hesitation.

What I learned on this trip reinforces something I tell all my clients: work with an advisor who can give you the full picture. The positives, the cautions, and the potential benefits of timing your trip strategically. I went to Punta Cana so I could speak from experience. Now, when clients ask about the Dominican Republic, I don't just describe Bavaro Beach. I can tell them exactly how that water felt, how long we stayed in it, and why they'll want to do the same.
